Big Print Blog

Why are we calling this blog "Big Print"?

Because we want to shed some light on the small print you see in financial documents. By pulling back the curtain on how a credit card company really works, we can work together to be better.

Tips on How to Make Extra Money on the Side
Barclaycard Ring Public Blog

This week’s blog post in our “Financial Planter” series is written by Chonce Maddox, a Financial Services Professional.*

Women_With_Camera.jpgWhat are your financial goals for 2017? Whether you’re looking to pay off student loans, save toward a down payment on a house or that great vacation you’ve been dreaming about, making extra money on the side is always a smart strategy as you work toward your financial goals.

You could get a part-time job—but then you have to commit to another work schedule and rely on a set wage. Where’s the fun in that? Why not become your own boss with a side gig?

Check out these ideas to get your creativity powered up!

Freelance with your skills

Why not use the skills you have already developed? Just take an honest look at what you do well and align it with job ideas for the perfect side gig.

  • Photography - A popular side hustle, photography might be just the thing for you. You can even earn cash by submitting your photographs up for licensing on websites like istockphoto.com or shutterstock.com.
  • Design home décor crafts - Open a shop on Etsy and sell your crafts to shoppers looking for unique products.
  • Graphic or web design work - Freelance your graphic art or web design skills by offering your services on a marketplace like Upwork
  • Driving skills - Become a driver for a ridesharing company like Uber or Lyft and earn extra cash picking up passengers when it’s convenient for your schedule.

Package your knowledge digitally

Create these products, package them up and you’re ready to earn money from every sale or click.

  • Write an e-book - Have a story you want to tell? You could write an eBook and sell it through Amazon Direct Publishing
  • Create a blog - It probably won’t provide any instant income; however blogging income can certainly be diversified (from affiliate marketing and ads, to sponsored content), but first some rules: you need to establish your platform, narrow down your niche and consistently put out great content.
  • Launch an online course - Pick something you’re great at, decide your curriculum and then work through a platform like genconnectU or Udemy to get your courses built and sold.

Teach and tutor

If you’ve ever been a teacher, or you’re an expert on a subject, share your knowledge with new students as a tutor, coach or instructor.

  • Tutor remotely - To teach students online, check out sites such as StudyPool, CheggTutors or Tutor.com
  • Design an adult education class - Propose a course to a local community college or school board.
  • Coach a sport or lead a workout regimen at the local gym.
  • Teach music lessons - Anything from guitar to voice can be taught from the comfort of your home or from a music shop.

Make money from your body, brain and opinions

You can actually get paid for sharing your thoughts and opinions on everything from products to current events.

  • Join a research study or focus group - Participants in focus groups are paid for their time and opinions, providing market research for brands and businesses. Check out sites like Mediabarn Research and MindSwarms. You could also get paid for participating in medical studies, which you can find online through CenterWatch.com or ClinicalTrials.gov.
  • Model as an art subject - Hey, you never know! Look to local colleges, adult education programs, art schools and even galleries.

Sell or rent what’s under your roof

When it comes to getting rid of old unwanted stuff from your house and garage, you probably think of Craigslist and eBay first—but there are other exciting options!

  • Sell books - If you have old books and textbooks sitting around, BookScouter will search online buy-back sites to find the ones that will offer you the most money for each book.
  • Rent out your house on AirBNB - Host guests who’ll pay for a room or your whole house while you’re away.
  • Rent things out - Zilok is a site through which you can rent out anything from furniture and tools to video game consoles when they're not in use. Don’t overlook things like renting out your garage, parking space, or driveway.
  • Rent out your vehicle - Significant enough for a separate mention, your car could be pulling in rental income as well. Sites like Turo and GetAround can connect you with people who may be interested in renting your vehicle for a short time.

How will you make extra income in 2017?
